Fight World Hunger

Philadelphia, PA/April 16, 2007 – Tackling an issue that still haunts our world today, a hunger awareness event and fundraiser will be held on May 12, 2007 at the Rotunda (40 th and Walnut). The night will be a unique opportunity for people to step into the shoes of those that are faced with a food crisis whether it is due to their economic or medical condition.

The night will use music, dance, slideshow, art and an unusual dining experience to get the point across that healthy food is a basic human right. The proceeds raised will benefit Philabundance (3) and MANNA(4), two Philadelphia organizations, both committed to the fight in their own way.

Providing the music will be the ever so fresh DJ Skeme Richards, who has 20 years into the Philly scene spinnin' everything from breaks, soul, hip-hop and funk. DJ Phsh will also take a turn on the 1's and 2's giving a little taste of why he's becoming a staple in the Philly hip-hop scene.

The Nzinga Arts Collective will be providing the visuals with a dance that will display the struggle, hope and beauty of humanity. The 3-woman ensemble communicate their emotions through the use of their bodies.

There will also be a series of giveaways throughout the night in addition to your chance to purchase a unique artistic creation that will remind you of the hunger problems facing the impoverished every day, and your willingness to help.

Representatives from MANNA and Philabundance will be on hand to talk about each of their organizations. Tickets for the dinner should be purchased in advance ($10) and for the party ($6). You may purchase tickets by contacting Deesha at dyer95@hotmail.com. Dinner will commence at 7:30pm, while the regular party will start from 9:00 – 11:00 p.m. If you are interested in sponsoring or donating, please contact Deesha at the email above.

Thank you in advance for your support in fighting this global epidemic.

(1) Launched October 2003, Cover Your Lover (CYL) was founded as a tool to connect the hip-hop and AIDS community. CYL moonlights at adult hip-hop spots around the city, distributing over 1,000 condoms and leaflets containing information and education about preventing the spread of AIDS, and the importance of testing. Since its conception, CYL has now expanded to include all musical genres in its mission. CYL has been featured in local and national newspapers, television stations, and numerous websites. CYL has spoken to numerous high school students emphasizing the significance of knowledge of sexual health, safer sex, and more importantly, abstinence and self respect.
(2) Freshout was formed in early 2006 to cultivate and grow the music, arts, and culture scene in Philadelphia. Through producing and promoting a diverse variety of events and hosting a multi-dimensional website – freshoutmedia.com, Freshout has quickly become recognized as a leading source of exposure and edutainment for Philadelphia's artist community. Freshout also supports several non-profit organizations and social causes, such as the genocide in Darfur, the AIDS pandemic in Africa, and environmental consciousness.

(3) Philabundance was founded in 1984 to help fight hunger in the Delaware Valley while reducing food waste. Concentrating its efforts on perishable foods, Philabundance has developed a food distribution system that includes direct delivery and local hubs. On January 1, 2005, Philabundance combined forces with the Philadelphia Food Bank, which had concentrated on non-perishable food, to provide a "Full Plate of Services" to member agencies. Our food distribution now includes a Walk-Through, where member agencies can "shop" for items not listed on the menu. http://www.philabundance.org/

(4) Formed in 1990 by members of the First Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia, MANNA is not-for-profit, non-sectarian. MANNA provides essential and specialized services to men, women and children living with HIV / AIDS, cancer and other life-threatening illness in Eastern Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey. http://www.mannapa.org/

4/16/07 linkie links...

I am extremely tired right now from having a StressEcho cardiology test done. Work is quite busy, my friend Davina is going to be on Malaysia's edition of 'So You Think You Can Dance', this IMUS shit is on my nerves, a student at Virginia Tech killed 33 people - massive prayers go out, I'm questioning whether I should try to go into journalism for real (probably won't), at the stage where I like a boy and don't know if he likes me (reminder of why I don't date - first and last time you'll hear me mention my love life), I am teaching a sexual health workshop in 2 weeks, my Hunger fundraiser is in 3 weeks, and I miss my friend Casey. Anyway, I wrote 3 things to share with you. They are all fairly small. One is the famed Kool Herc (see picture) who will be spinnin' at Tastytreats this week, the other is the Reef/Sean Price/JMT show at the Trocadero. The last is the Wordplay with my buddy Stress (see picture) whose group, the Subhoodz just came out with a new release. Until next week - sunshine shine down...xo

Links...4/9/07

I'm really not in the posting mood, so here are the links to my articles this week. One was Reef's producer, Eyego. He's actually funnier than the article reads.

The other two are the reviews that I did for Giant Step, but on a different site, Geoclan. Please check the site out. A friend of mine is trying to do some positive things in the community, so I wanted to support him with that by giving him some content and since these were done, it made sense to give him these.

4*5*2007 reviews...thicke/winehouse

I was going to wait until next week to post these links, but I need something to do during the commercial breaks of "The Office". Here are 2 reviews that I did for Giant Step. One of them is the Amy Winehouse 'Back to Black' album. I listened to it with no influences. Meaning I didn't read any other reviews and I also didn't read any gossip about her. I wanted to write it based strictly on the music. Anyway, I also had to be sure not to compare it to her first release which I love because America didn't get that release and many people wouldn't relate.

The Robin Thicke concert was really dope and I tried to convey my enthusiasm the best I could. I will be checking him out again, and as my friend Jessica says, 'He is so not ugly'. I am spoiled with being in the front row though I realize. Anyway, enjoy the reads! I think I am going to do Joss Stone's album soon.....which I love! I know it seems I only review albums I dig and that's true - it's easier that way and I don't have time or energy to do a bad one. So when I am asked I just say....no thanks!

Enjoy. xo

*Links for April 2nd*

It's been a *trying* 2 weeks, so I haven't had the chance to update this really. I am just really trying to balance my life. Trying to figure out a way to do what I love without getting hurt in the process. Trying to really listen more, talk less. Just trying...all is good though.

This week I have 3 links. 2 Wordplays that I did for 215hiphop.com - 1 is the founder behind the site, Justin and the other is MC, Viro the Virus. He is such a sweetheart. The other link is Verso's album release party. He's another MC and really dope actually, so the write up was easy. I was hoping for a picture, but I'm just happy its in there (thanks editor Pat). I did an Amy Winehouse review for Giant Step, but I honestly can't find the link - eh...I'll post it up when Geoclan puts it up or something. Reviews don't seem to come to me naturally. Not saying everything else does, but I need to rethink doing reviews...Anyway....Enjoy, Deesha
